MyCarePro Expands Across 32 States to Support Consumers, Employers, and Brokers Through Life's Biggest Transitions Navigating health insurance can be challenging under the best of ...
Updates on COBRA, Marketplace, Medicare and all things healthcare.
MyCarePro exists to take that piece off an employee's plate. We walk people through their coverage options one on one, explain what things actually cost, and help them land on a plan that fits their budget and their family's needs, all at no charge to the employee or the employer. For HR teams, that means a more people-centered offboarding process and fewer benefits questions landing in your inbox. For employees, it means someone answers the phone.
Employer-sponsored coverage typically ends on the employee's last day or at the end of that month, depending on the plan. After that, a departing employee usually has three real paths: elect COBRA and keep the exact same plan at full price, shop the ACA Marketplace during the 60-day Special Enrollment Period triggered by the coverage loss, or join a spouse's plan if one is available. Which path makes sense depends on income, health needs, and how much runway someone has before their next job starts, and that's exactly where most people get stuck without help.
For most people, COBRA costs more than they expect. Employees pay the full premium their employer used to subsidize, plus up to a 2% administrative fee, which often adds up to $800 to $1,200 or more a month for a family plan. It's not unaffordable for everyone, but it's worth comparing against Marketplace plans before assuming COBRA is the only option.
Nothing disastrous, as long as the deadline is met. COBRA can be elected up to 60 days after the notice is sent, and coverage is retroactive to the day the old plan ended if it's elected within that window. The same 60-day clock applies to ACA Marketplace enrollment. Waiting past that window is when people end up with a real gap in coverage.
Often, yes. ACA Marketplace plans come with income-based subsidies that can bring the monthly premium down well below COBRA pricing, sometimes to $0 depending on household income. Some employees also qualify for a spouse's plan or, depending on age and circumstances, Medicare.
Not if it's handled within the enrollment window. COBRA can extend to a spouse and dependents, and Marketplace family plans are also available. The key is comparing what each option actually costs for the whole family, not just the employee.
60 days from the date coverage ends or the COBRA notice is sent, whichever applies. That sounds like plenty of time, and it usually is, but the plans and pricing are easier to compare early, before a gap in coverage starts creating its own stress.
A departing employee who feels supported during this transition remembers it, and so does everyone still on your team who's watching how it's handled. Giving HR a resource to point to, instead of fielding COBRA and Marketplace questions directly, protects your team's time and your employer brand at the same time.
We can also customize a flyer with your company's logo, colors, and messaging so it drops straight into your existing offboarding packet.
